Music is Magic: Thundercat

Hello all and happy Wednesday! I just wanted to quickly drop it with a new installment of ‘Music is Magic’. I have to admit that besides chilin’ with Zelda and trying to keep these plants alive, a lot of my summer break has been listening to music and Netflix binging. And of course with this extended break, I find myself mindlessly staying on social media for longer than I should. I always say I need a break from it, with the occasional deleting of the apps.

Today’s ‘Music is Magic’ has a bit to do with that love/hate relationship with social media. If it’s not on Snapchat or Twitter then did it even happen?? Of course it did, and we probably appreciated the moment more when we didn’t stop to grab our phone to capture it.

Those of you may be familiar with Thundercat…not the cartoon, in this case, but the bassist, vocalist and producer. I recently became familiar with him, when one of his songs ‘Heartbreaks and Setbacks’ appeared on my favorite new show ‘Insecure’. From there, I was on the hunt for more work by him. I soon discovered that he has been in the game for quite some time as a session musician, producer and collaborator for the likes of Erykah Badu, Childish Gambino and Kendrick Lamar.

I’ve had his newest album ‘Drunk’ since it was released, but hadn’t listened to it in it’s entirety. One day his song ‘Bus in These Streets’ came up on the shuffle, and now has been on repeat. This verse, definitely caught my attention as most of his stuff does:

From the minute I wake up I’m staring at the screen

Watching the world go insane

Gotta stay connected so I know what’s happening

In these streets

So for those of us with FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), you’ll be able to relate to this song.

It’s a short little ditty that sounds like it could have been written in the 1960s, sang by either Dionne Warick or Petula Clarke. Check them out on YouTube, if you’re not sure what I mean.

I also love the opening verse:

Stuck in the clouds

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it

I’m high as a kite

Don’t bother me

I’m out here probably doing the most

Social media, has a major impact, good or bad. We control what we put out there for the world to see. For all you know, I’m out here “doing the most” but in reality, I’m about to mop my kitchen. Catch my Instagram Stories for that exclusive..just kidding, I’m not gonna do it for the ‘gram.

Have a great day, everyone. And as always, Thank you so much for reading,
